Paw Paw Township took shape by an act of Indiana's Legislative Council on March 26, 1835, when it was first known as Lafayette Township. The name changed to Paw Paw in 1867, borrowed from the Paw Paw River and the pawpaw fruit that once grew thick along its banks. Today, the township is home to 1,556 residents and includes the village of Roann.
Governed as an Indiana township, Paw Paw carries its history forward in the landmarks that dot its landscape. The Roann Covered Bridge, the Roann Historic District, Stockdale Mill, and the Halderman-Van Buskirk Farmstead all hold places on the National Register of Historic Places, standing as reminders of the generations who have called this corner of Wabash County home since 1835.
