Torning Township sits in the western part of Ward County, North Dakota, home to 61 residents. Norwegian settlers founded the township in 1905, naming it after Torning Township near Benson, Minnesota, a nod to the community they'd left behind. The township appeared in Ward County's 1915 township plat book, and its record materials, held in the county archives, span from 1932 to 1974.
Like other townships in the county, Torning is governed by a township board of supervisors, and it's among those Ward County lists as able to regulate zoning within its borders. It's a small place with a long memory, still carrying its founders' Minnesota roots into its second century.
