The Town of Bayview came into being in 1913, formally created by Chapter 89, Laws of 1913, out of parts of the towns of Washburn and Bayfield along with a section of the City of Washburn. Folks held the first town meeting that same year at the Houghton School. The town board has guided local affairs ever since, and the current town hall, built in 1974, replaced the original meeting place.
Tucked between the City of Washburn and Lake Superior in northern Bayfield County, Bayview grew up around places like the Village of Houghton. Brownstone quarries drew workers in the 1880s, and Finnish settlers arrived in the 1890s, shaping the community that endures today with a population of 535.
