The Tartan 34 Overview:
The Tartan 34 is a true Sparkman & Stephens classic—a thoroughbred under the old CCA rule that still impresses today. With a PHRF rating in the high-180s and class victories in events like the 1968 SORC, she combines balanced speed and seakindliness that make her both a spirited club racer and a comfortable cruiser. Off the wind she shines, yet she tracks beautifully upwind thanks to her thoughtfully proportioned fin keel and narrow waterline, delivering a performance you can tune to your own sailing ambitions.
Underpinning that performance is Tartan’s hallmark construction: a resin-rich solid fiberglass hull joined to a balsa-cored deck, all bonded on a bolted-through teak toerail. With 4,400 lb of lead ballast and a skeg-mounted rudder (which on this vessel is broken off and requires replacement, or at least significant repair - but due to the skeg mounting, no compromise of the hull), the 11,000 lb displacement lends both stiffness and comfort in a seaway. Below decks you’ll find the original 27 HP Yanmar, tankage for 57 gal of freshwater and 23 gal of diesel, plus the classic Cherry joinery that defines the T-34’s warm, functional interior.
Though years of abandonment have left her in need of a total refit—interior in bad shape, engine non-functional, systems all need replacement, a broken rudder and chalky gelcoat—the very bones of this hull invite reinvention. Imagine stripping back to a blank “canvas,” rebuilding her interior to your own vision. With Tartan 34Cs holding their value and even appreciating as sailor-builders discover their virtues, this project is a rare chance to craft a personalized Sparkman & Stephens icon—your own interpretation of one of America’s premier 34-footers.
