Q:
"What is a “phantom draw”? And what is a “slick top”?"
- Asked by #18262952 12/29/2025 01:20 AM
A:
A “phantom draw” (also called parasitic draw) is when something in the vehicle continues to drain the battery even when the car is turned off and parked. This can be caused by aftermarket electronics, faulty components, or wiring issues that pull power when they shouldn’t. We suspect this issue was related to the emergency lighting and computer equipment that may not have been wired correctly when the vehicle was first outfitted for patrol use. However, all this equipment has been removed, and the vehicle is as close to factory-wired as possible. Therefore, uninstalling the extra electronic equipment may have resolved this phantom draw, but I am unable to test it. This vehicle has two batteries under the passenger seat, both of which need replacing. Once fresh batteries are installed, there are some mechanics that can test for phantom draws. While in service, we encountered problems only when the vehicle was left parked for several days without running. Once jumped the alternator would recharge the batteries and it would start on its own. The term "Slick Top" means that when we installed our police lighting, we did not mount a light bar to the roof; all the lights were mounted internally behind the front windshield and rear window. This means we did not drill holes in the vehicle's roof to run wiring for the lights. Some antennas were installed on the roof, but we are leaving them as they are.

No, it shifted normally since we had it.
