Freedom Township sits in the northern part of Carroll County, Illinois, one of twelve townships in the county. Organized in 1849, when Carroll County adopted township organization, its early history traces back to the Cherry Grove settlement and Owen's Point, where a trading post served area residents in the 1830s. A 19th-century account noted the township's northwest half as hilly and once wooded.
Today, Freedom Township is governed under the township supervisor-board form of government. The 2020 census recorded a population of 773, up from 695 in 2010. The Carroll County Highway Department maintains current records of the township's road mileage.
